A native of Washington, DC, Mark was born in 1951 and lived in the city until 1957 when his family moved into Prince Georges County, Maryland. He graduated from Potomac Sr. High School in 1969 and then attended University of South Carolina NROTC program where he graduated in 1974 as an Ensign in the US Navy. Mark went on to attend flight school in Pensacola, Fl. and earned his Navy Pilots Wings in Beeville, Texas in 1976.
Highlights of his career include flying tours onboard 5 different aircraft carriers, including tours as Air Operations Officer onboard USS John F. Kennedy CV-67, Commanding Officer tours in both VS-32 and VS-27, Air/Mini Boss on USS Saratoga CV-60 (91-94) and Commander Sea Control Wing Atlantic (97-99). Mark has logged over 4,000 hours in the S-3 Viking aircraft and over 400+ carrier landings. The highlight of his flying career was making the very last arresting landing onboard and the final catapult launch from USS Saratoga CV-60 in 1994. He retired as a Captain, US Navy in 1999.
Mark then worked over 23 years in the Defense Industry traveling around the globe and has recently fully retired.
In addition to recently being nominated as Vice President of the USS Saratoga Association, he is an active member of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). Mark has been a Life Member of the Association since 2017 and has recently become a member of the Scholarship Committee as well.
He and his wife Kathy are both retired enjoying life in the Annapolis area.

Reported aboard the ship in January of ‘72 into V1 Division as a Blue Shirt in Fly 1. Eventually ended up as the Division yeoman as well as the LSO-PO.

Business/Human Resources manager in waste removal industry around the world from 1978 to retirement in 2015. Currently a volunteer in Boy Scouts, American Red Cross and local veteran’s organizations. Certified by the Veteran’s Administration as a Veteran Service Representative (VSR) for Veterans Service Organizations (VSO) like the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Red Cross.
Lives in Parkersburg, WV with wife Ann. Parent of three daughters and grandparent of three boys and three girls. Avid U.S.S. Saratoga Board Member and participant of 20 reunions since 1998.
Shall establish and maintain a bank account with three (3) authorized board member signatures; shall send out dues notices to all recorded members; shall collect and receive from the Secretary of the Association dues sent to him as well as receive all dues directly from members. He shall make available a written, factual statement reflecting the transactions of the account at least two (2) days prior to the Annual Meeting, as well as submitting quarterly reports to the Executive Board.

First Duty Station was NAVAIR / Cruise Missile Command – 1990 – 1992. Primary role was supporting Tomahawk Cruise Missile programming for fleet test and operational use. Successful fleet use in Operation Desert Shield / Operation Desert Storm.
Second Duty Station – U.S.S. Saratoga CV-60, 1992 – 1994. Attached to S-7 Div. during Final Deployment which supported major operations in the Adriatic for Operation Provide Promise for Yugoslavia (Serbian/Croatian) Conflict UN operations. After completion of Saratoga’s final deployment, I stayed on as ships company to support decommissioning activities up to actual decommissioning ceremony.
Stationed aboard U.S.S. Wasp LHD-1 from 1994 – 1996 as part of S-7 Division. I supported all shipboard networked computer systems and satellite communications systems. Honorably discharged and moved onto Civilian life.
Since the Navy, I raised my two sons and worked as an IT Network Manager for Texas A&M University – Kingsville for 10 years and now I am a Systems Admin supporting IT Infrastructure Operations for CPS Energy in San Antonio, Tx. I have currently been with CPS Energy for 15 years.
I am Married to my beautiful and loving wife Liz. We have been married now for two years and between us we have 5 amazing children. Four Boys and one Daughter (David, Major, Zach, Sam and Erica). We currently live in New Braunfels, Tx.
A Parliamentarian is an expert in rules of order and the proper procedures for the conduct of meetings of deliberative assemblies. Parliamentarians assist organizations in the drafting and interpretation of bylaws and rules of order, and the planning and conduct of meetings.
I barely got in the Navy because I didn’t have a high school diploma. My best friend and I enlisted on the buddy plan and went to boot camp in Orlando. I reported to Sara on 11 December 1971 and was sent to OL Division, Lookouts. Right before deployment to Westpac I was transferred to 1st Division in Deck Department and worked in the Anchor Locker, the Focsle.
I stayed in 1st Division until just before Thanksgiving 72 when I cross decked into OI Division working in Combat Information Center, CIC, for the rest of the Westpac tour. When we came to Portsmouth, I was sent to Great Lakes for OS “A” school. I came back to Sara just after the fire. Toward the end of the 74-75 Med Cruise I was sent TAD to the Master-at-Arms.
I left Sara on 29 July 1975 on an early out and enrolled at University of Texas-El Paso to play football. I got hurt and couldn’t play football anymore and then moved to Alaska on 1 November 1976 and lived there for 43.5 years. While there I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Education and History where I taught High School History/math and coached football. I got into foster care and as a single man, I fostered difficult high school males. I managed and owned water/waste water treatment chemical companies I got lucky when I met and married Kathryn Rhinehart on 3 April 2002. We stayed in Alaska until Kathryn’s mother asked for help so we retired and moved to Frisco, Texas in June 2020.
Shall maintain, store and transport USS Saratoga memorabilia for display in the designated Artifacts Room in support of the USS Saratoga Association's Annual Reunion. The Historian reports to and works in conjunction with the Association's President.
Went to Boot Camp in Orlando,Fl. in 1969 on a deferred Enlistment. Enlisted in 1970 and went to STG-A School. In 1976 change rate from STG-2 to ABH-2 and in 1977 made ABH-1.
Plank owner of the U.S.S. BAGELY (DE 1069) served on various tin cans and shore bases and VA 204 as a Line Supervisor. Served on carriers U.S.S. LEXINGTON, USS Eisenhower (VA 204) and U.S.S. SARATOGA CV-60 from 1986-1993 at which time I retired.

I was born and raised in Phila., Pa. Enlisted into the Navy May 18, 1981. After boot camp and MM A school was assigned to USS SIMON LAKE AS33 Oct and Nov 1981 in R Division, outside machine shop.

Jerry joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve after high school and served two years in the 7th Special Infantry Company in Louisville, KY. He later transferred to the U S Navy Reserve then went on active duty at Boot Camp in Bainbridge Maryland early 1956. Enlisting in the USN was given assignment to Airman School in Norman, Oklahoma. after boot camp then “A School at Millington, Tennessee. Assigned to USS SARATOGA fall 1956 reporting to CVA-60 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Serving three years then assigned to Fitron 101 Nas Boca Chica Naval Air Station Key West Florida.

CAPTAIN Stephen A. Bird was born on 06 Oct 1952 in Flint, Michigan. In 1971, he enlisted into the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. Upon completion of boot camp at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois and Hospital Corps School, Dan Diego, California in 1972, he was stationed at the Naval Hospital Philadelphia, PA where he was the first OMBUDSMAN of the hospital. After his completion of 2 ½ years on active duty, he maintained his reserve affiliation as a hospital corpsman while attending Bible College. After his graduation with a BA, he continued his education at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, Springfield, MO graduating with a Master of Divinity. He On 17 March 1980, Chaplain Bird was commissioned into the Theological Student Program and attended the Chaplains Basic Course, Newport, Rhode Island that same year.
Chaplain Bird pastored a church in Columbia, Kentucky for two years before being recalled unto active duty on board the aircraft carrier U.S.S. SARATOGA (CV-60) in February 1983 -1985. In 1985, he received orders to the Naval Support Activity, Holy Loch, Scotland as the Protestant Chaplain until 1987. He was transferred to the 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he was assigned as the battalion Chaplain to Third Battalion, Sixth Marines and later became the Sixth Marines Regimental Chaplain until 1990. Chaplain Bird was selected to attend post graduate school at Duke Divinity School, Durham, North Carolina to study homiletics. Upon graduation in 1991, he was assigned to Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton California as the Senior Chaplain until Sept 1993. He transferred to the Naval Reserves. He retired from the Navy after 40 years of honorable service on October 1, 2011. He retired as a North Carolina State prison chaplain after 22 ½ years of service. He received his Doctor of Ministry from Regent University on May 9, 2020.
He is married to the former Christine Pivoroff with two grown children, Stephen Gilbert and Deborah Lee and three grandchildren.

Shall handle organizing and leading the Scholarship Committee in developing the application ,the rubric for grading each applicant, and determining the winner of the Saratoga Association Scholarship Program each year.
